Introduction

The College maintains an assortment of standard printing services for students in both black and white and color printing options. Student Assistants will routinely re-fill the printers with appropriate paper. If any printer does require additional paper please report this to the Help-Desk either at helpdesk@arch.tamu.edu or 979-862-8584.

Accessing Printers

All available printer resources can be accessed via the same method. On a Windows machine, open the Start Menu, in the search/run field type in "\\print.arch.tamu.edu". A window will display containing all the shared printers contained on the print server. Printers can be added by right clicking the appropriate icon and selecting "Connect". Printer drivers can be installed directly from this server, additionally, the Help Desk is able to manage each individual printer. The print queue for a printer can be accessed by double-clicking the printer icon or selecting “Open” on the right-click menu. If the print driver is not already installed, it will be initialized before the printer queue opens.

Paper Size Selection Disclaimer and Image Resolution Capability of Printers

Our printers cannot print Full Bleed on any sizes due to printer the setting a margin of .4 inches on each side. A 36" size will print 35.2", and a 42" size will print 41.2" to accommodate the .4" margin on each side. A print preview window in Adobe Reader will show any part of your image in gray if it is too big for the paper size chosen. Use built in margins within your image to print on the size chosen, and if full bleed is desired, the user would have to pick a bigger size to accommodate the full bleed. Users are charged based on the paper size chosen and not on the size of the image. Please keep this in mind when making your printing decisions.

Each printer has a max setting for the resolution of an image that it can handle. If your image is not set to the required resolution for that printer then the image might not print correctly and the user will incur any charges for the misprinted image. Procedure for Printing Files for on behalf of a customer

 Fees:

A $7.50 service charge will be added to the print cost each time a customer asks us to print the file on their behalf (vs. helping the customer who's attempting to print on their own):

When asked WHY a fee is being charged:

  1. The service charge is to offset the cost of labor incurred by utilizing student worker resources in printing.
  2. Printing a document on behalf of a customer takes away from our time to address the needs of others waiting in line at the Helpdesk.
  3. We encourage our customers to learn how to print on their own; the service charge is intended to promote that self-sufficiency.

Faculty and Staff Printing

Departments have Xerox printers that are budgeted specifically for department use by faculty and staff.

PaperCut

The software ITS utilizes to administrate prints and delegate user and group account charges is PaperCut. PaperCut allows autonomy of accounts for black and white printers located around the campus and also allows for control of color and large format prints by ITS Staff. This software calculates prices based on the paper type, paper size and the printer that is being used. For small format prints, the price is set by page. For large format prints, the price is set by square foot.
